MAURA KELLY on New York.

I was getting ready to take a two-year sabbatical from New York for an all-expenses-paid master's program—the only thing that would ever get me to leave Manhattan—when I rediscovered Joan Didion's book "Slouching Towards Bethlehem." I flipped to the final essay, "Goodbye to All That," written nearly four decades ago, after she'd dumped Manhattan for Los Angeles. "Everything that was said to me I seemed to have heard before," she complained. "There were certain parts of the city I had to avoid." Worst of all, she whined, there were no "new faces" in the New York.

Joan Didion, you fool! I thought. [...]

I'm in a small southwestern Virginia city. Know what I avoid here, Joan Didion? The Valley View Mall, whose very existence has destroyed the vista it boasts of. The Wal-Mart, with the gun department next to the jewelry counter. The omnipresent sports bars, where people in business casual talk about nothing but college football. This town ain't for me because there's no place that gives me the simple hope that I could meet someone here who will change my life...

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse.

TELL-ALL SITES PUT ONLINE DATER PROFILES TO TRUTH TEST.

Falls Church resident Jeff Martin, 32, went on Match.com in 2003, after his divorce. He estimates that, in the year that he used the site, he went on dates with 60 women. About a fourth to a third differed significantly from their profile, says Martin, most using a picture that was "five years and 20 pounds ago." His biggest shocker? A woman who sent him photos of a tall, athletic blonde—one of her lying on the beach in a red bikini—then flew herself out from San Diego to meet him and turned out to be someone else entirely.

"She probably outweighed me by 30 pounds," says the 185-pound Martin. "Her face was not at all the same."

He squired Ms. Someone Else around all three days they'd planned. She never copped to the deception. Love did not bloom...

CAPSULE REVIEW of Vanessa Redgrave as Hecuba: All right, but absolutely no need to rush out and see it. The English reviewers were more right about this production than the American ones have been. Also, P.S. Please, somebody shoot that singing chorus.

A YEAR, TO THE DAY, AFTER THEIR FIRST DATE.

Rat. I like to think of this relationship as a long series of one-night stands.

TCB. That does help rationalize it...

What could my father do? He was almost at his wit's end;—talked it over with her in all moods;—placed his arguments in all lights;—argued the matter with her like a christian,—like a heathen,—like a husband,—like a father,—like a patriot,—like a man:—My mother answered every thing only like a woman; which was a little hard upon her;—for as she could not assume and fight it out behind such a variety of characters,—'twas no fair match;—'twas seven to one.—What could my mother do?

AMNESTY INT'L RELEASES NEW REPORT on violence against women in Asia.

Violence against women took an especially brutal form in Bangladesh, where at least 153 women were attacked with acid between January and October 2004. Reasons for most attacks were reportedly disputes between families on payment of dowry or refusal by women to marry or provide sex, Amnesty said.

China fared badly too, where serious violations against women and girls continued to be reported as a result of the enforcement of the family planning policy, including forced abortions and sterilisations...
