      ( 1:17 PM ) The Rat
Skip isn't exactly thrilled to see me, I don't think he realized who it was with her tongue down Dean's throat. But Mr. Polite takes a seat and tries to make the best of it. Dean's squirmy, but he offers Skip a glass of champagne and Skip says great! with this big fake heartiness. Men are so stuck inside these codes of behavior, they're like musicians who only know three chords. Emotionally they're punks. Dean and Skip are both playing at being good sports right now while mentally they're circling around each other like attack dogs. Skip's mind is going, I pissed here, this is my territory, how dare you piss here? And Dean's really upset because Skip got here first. So what does that make me, guys, the fire hydrant?

She had been forced into prudence in her youth, she learned romance as she grew older—the natural sequel of an unnatural beginning.

RECENT SEARCH REQUEST.

who invented the Rat

A: I don't know, but if I did I'd have a few choice words for him.

Apologies for the lack of posts; things are going to be slow till I get at-home Internet set up. Btw the Roth wasn't anything to write home about, alas—false alarm! (In my defense, Everyman [2006] was fantastic, so he's definitely still turning out brilliant work, sometimes.)

I also found Waiter Rant's book to be—not bad exactly, but not great either. He seems to have used up the best of his stories/writing in the blog, before the book contract ever came about.

BLOGGING IS LIKELY TO BE SPARSE till after I return Stateside in a week's time. Am currently in Berlin, but heading to Istanbul tomorrow, where I will be staying in sybaritic decadence courtesy of a ridiculously generous brother. (Now you see why Ratty is so dead set against only children!) The Staatsoper is really the only reason I'm at all sorry to leave Berlin—check out the photo galleries of the Gambler and Fidelio productions I saw last night and tonight! Both productions were extremely good, but especially Fidelio (Waltraud Meier = amazing)—though you can't help wondering if any of the prisoner chorus have at the back of their minds the thought, "Did I really spend all those years in voice lessons and endless practicing, only to end up standing in a giant waffle?"

Berlin itself has been a disappointment, but I should have been prepared for that, considering it was built by those nice folks who brought you the Midwest. Seriously, it's like the Cleveland of Europe.

Best arts stop: N/A. No, really. After London and Paris, the place is a joke.

Best historic/political stop: Without a doubt, the Wannsee villa, where the 90-minute meeting was held at which the Nazi high command finalized its "final solution" for Europe's Jews. (Easily beats out the Stasimuseum, despite my being such a Cold War buff.) Wannsee is absolutely worth a visit if you're ever in Berlin. N.B. The memos issued to conference attendees refer to the meeting as "to be followed by breakfast."
